Bethesda Softworks has a little something planned to tide us over while we wait for The Elder Scrolls VI.

This year, the developer will release a brand-new adventure for The Elder Scrolls Online - one that promises to give players access to a "never-before-seen" part of Tamriel filled with new stories and cultures to experience.

Take a look at the stunning cinematic teaser trailer below. It's not much to go on, but you can be sure hardcore fans are already scouring every inch of it for clues.

Bethesda won't be sharing much more on the expansion for a little while yet, but fans are already speculating that ship-based exploration and combat will be a key feature of this new adventure. It's hard to ignore the possibility, given the three ships that glide through the ocean towards the shore. The Elder Scrolls Online's three factions? Very probably!

Reddit also believes that the expansion takes place in the Bretons' home province of High Rock, a coastal region dotted with mysterious islands and plenty of rugged terrain. It certainly matches up with what we can see in the trailer. No doubt its many islands and craggy nooks would be the perfect fit for an adventure filled with surprising new stories and deadly secrets.

The only catch here is that we have seen High Rock in Elder Scrolls games before - most notably in Daggerfall and The Elder Scrolls Online. Still, there's every chance High Rock is what we're seeing in the trailer, and that the region is just one small part of the adventures that await.

Full details on this upcoming year-long story will be unveiled by Bethesda later this month. You can tune in on Twitch for the full reveal on January 27.
