I would have thought that a global pandemic where millions upon millions would have had to stay indoors would be the biggest drive towards gaming. I mean when you can’t go outside there aren’t that many options of how to entertain yourself right? But it seems despite the pandemic, Steam’s all-time concurrent users record has just been rebroken on the weekend of Thanksgiving.
PC Gamer has spotted that Steam has broken its concurrent users record once again. SteamDB, a site that tracks all these stats for our perusal, reported that after breaking 26 million concurrent users back in April, Steam’s record was recently broken again with a mighty 27,384,959 users over logged in to the patform. Not all of these users were in-game, 7.8 million were, but it does mean 27 million users had the client open at the time. Interestingly, PC Gamer notes that despite more users on the client, it didn’t reach the 8.1 million record of in-game players that happened back in March 2020.
So what was being played at the time of the record? Well the usual suspects, really. Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (915,791 players), Dota 2 (677,744), and PlayerUnknown: Battlegrounds (344,841) were all up there. Additionally, you’ll see other hits like Apex Legends, New World and Halo Infinite following up with large numbers in-game too.

I guess this is a sign that even though other platforms, like the Epic Game Store are also slowly gaining audiences of their own, Steam prevails. It might now have competition but between the great sales and the huge number of titles on the platform, it’s still the go-to storefront for PC gamers. And it’s just as well because PC has recently been crowned the ultimate gaming hardware of all time by the Golden Joysticks and Valve’s founder Gabe Newell was there to accept it.
