Starfield's length confirmed, and it's surprisingly short

One of the biggest games of the year, Starfield, will reportedly have about a surprisingly short main story.

One of the biggest games of the year, Starfield, will reportedly have about a surprisingly short main story.

Thousands of players of all ages are hyping up the release of Bethesda's next major release, Starfield, which will launch exclusively for Xbox and PC in September this year. The hype train has gotten so much momentum that some are planning on taking the week off work when it releases, and some are even buying new Xbox’s just to play the game.

Promising an enormous galaxy with over 1,000 worlds to explore, players will be able to build their own spaceship, gather new companions, including a modern take on the “adoring fan" from The Elder Scrolls Oblivion, and explore sprawling cities like New Atlantis

Given its huge scope, many players have been wondering how long it’ll take to beat Starfield, which has finally been answered by Bethesda exec Todd Howard.

Howard recently spoke about the game’s length in an interview with IGN, and said that the main story, at the moment, takes 30-40 hours to complete, which isn’t far off other open-world Bethesda titles like The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and Fallout 4. Howard said this could change though prior to release, saying: “This one’s ending up a little bit longer [than our previous games] and we may tune that some still,”

While surprisingly short, 30-40 hours for the main story isn’t bad considering the majority of the game will likely consist of side-quests and exploring the various planets in the galaxy. There’s also a comprehensive base and ship-building system, which will surely eat away many players' time with the game.

In other news, Xbox has gotten a lot of backlash recently over its Starfield exclusivity, which is being used as evidence by the FTC to suggest the company is trying to push competitors out of the market by acquiring more developers and publishers. Salty PlayStation fans have also been signing a petition to have Starfield turned into a PS5 exclusive instead, which has failed spectacularly.
