With so much Star Wars fiction out there, you’re entirely forgiven for not knowing where the events of the 2008 game Star Wars: The Force Unleashed and its 2010-released sequel fit in the franchise’s wider spacefaring chronology. And as much as I’d love to tell you… I don’t know. Never played either game. Can’t say I’ve any urge to do so nowadays. Some things you just acknowledge, and move on.
Onto what I do know: the Force Unleashed games are well liked enough for there to be the occasional ripple of support for a remaster somewhen. And this new clip of The Force Unleashed II running on a PC with the settings turned way, way up goes some way to showing us what that kind of project might look like. As picked up by the folk at DSOG, this clip from YouTube channel Digital Dreams pushes The Force Unleashed II - an 11-year-old game, remember - to the limit. And yeah, it looks pretty great. Clearly it’s not looking like a title released for modern-gen hardware, but given this is a title that was released for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, yeah, it’s pretty great alright. Obviously this is the PC version that’s being modded, but still: what’s underneath is now a fairly old experience.
So what, exactly, is going on here? First of all, the game is running on an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090, which is basically your top-of-the-line graphics card right now. (RIght? I’m really not a PC guy but I get that impression.) It’s running on max settings and outputting at 8K too - you’ll want to adjust your YouTube settings accordingly and cross your fingers that your internet connection doesn’t instantly collapse. It’s not a remaster, obvs - but it’s a fair representation of what an attempt at that would look like.
The Digital Dreams team outline all of their PC gear on the YouTube post - I’m not about to list it all here, but you know where to go if you want that information (and sales links - content creators gotta pay for shoes, y’know). The response to the clip has been very positive indeed, with commenters offering such feedback as, “Damn, looks like I am watching Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order gameplay”; “Looks as good as anything released today” (I mean, not quite); and “There is no ray tracing in this. Your titles are clickbait.” There’s always one, isn’t there (and yes, ray tracing is active in this gameplay).
