Splinter Cell Remake Back On Track, Original Director Rejoins

Good news for a change.

It looks like the Splinter Cell remake may be back on track, as the original director has rejoined the project after leaving in 2022.

It’s hard to accept that it’s been 12 years since the last Splinter Cell game. This was a series where we were getting new entries every few years, and now it’s been dormant for almost two full console generations.

There was a bit of light at the end of the tunnel when Ubisoft announced the Splinter Cell 1 remake back in 2021, but the project hasn’t really had that many updates since then.

In nearly four years, we haven’t had any major updates regarding the remake’s development, and I’m inclined to say that it might be a while before we see anything concrete.

There has been a bit of good news this week though. The project’s original director, David Grivel, has re-joined the Splinter Cell remake three years after leaving it.

Grivel left Ubisoft in 2022 to join Ridgeline Games, a studio under Electronic Arts which was working on Battlefield 6 before being shut down in 2024. Grivel worked here as a Senior Design Director, focusing on the game’s campaign mode.

Since Ridgeline’s closure, Grivel did contract work for several games and studios, most notably providing consultancy work for the cyberpunk game Neo Berlin 2087.

He also briefly rejoined Ubisoft to work on an “unannounced project” before leaving in December 2024.

There's Hope Yet For Splinter Cell Remake

It appears that Grivel has now rejoined Ubisoft again in his old role as Game Director on the Splinter Cell remake, having started in November.

“Today, I am very, VERY happy to announce that I'm rejoining Ubisoft Toronto as Game Director on the Splinter Cell Remake! A very special team and project to me,” Grivel wrote in a LinkedIn post.

Grivel’s career at Ubisoft began in 2011 when he joined the company as a Game Designer for Ghost Recon Future Soldier.

A year later, he worked on Splinter Cell: Blacklist as a Senior Game Designer.

Considering Splinter Cell is a part of Grivel’s roots at Ubisoft, his presence as Game Director on the remake should be good news for the project.

Hopefully, we’ll hear more about it in the near future. Splinter Cell remains one of the best stealth games of the early 3D gaming era, sharing its legacy with the likes of stealth greats like Thief, Metal Gear Solid, and Hitman.
