'Spider-Man 4' Is Still Possible, According To Sam Raimi

It's been 15 years and there is still hope

Ever since the success of Spider-Man: No Way Home, people have been looking back at the old Spider-Man films and talking about what stories they’d like to see a return to.

Hopes that Andrew Garfield would come back for a third 'Amazing' Spider-Man film to complete his trilogy were dashed after the star claimed he’s taking a break from acting. There have also been a number of rumours that a fourth film in the Tobey Maguire series could happen. The film was planned out and would feature nemesis The Vulture. However, it was cancelled before production started.

We were lucky enough to talk to Tom Holland about No Way Home - catch up on that interview in the video below.

In an interview with Moviepilot, Sam Raimi - who directed the Maguire trilogy and is now promoting his new movie Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness - spoke about the cancellation of the fourth film in the series.

“We had a script years ago and we were actively working in pre-production. It was just that, it became a thing where there was a deadline and I didn’t want to make something which was less than great.”

Raimi continued: “I thought I had compromised a bit on Spider-Man 3, and I really wanted to pay the audience back on Spider-Man 4 and make the best Spider-Man of all. I couldn’t get the script together in that amount of time, so I told Sony I think it’s best if you go ahead with your planned alternate Spider-Man storyline because I didn’t want to let the audience down.”

Previously, Raimi has commented that returning to the Spider-Man films “sounds beautiful”, though he admitted that he hadn’t pursued the idea. While in the Moviepilot interview he confirms that with the completion of Doctor Strange 2 he is no longer currently tied to any Marvel project, and he is open to working with Tobey Maguire on Spider-Man again.

“I didn’t think it was possible but after jumping back in with the multiverse, I realised, just like Doctor Strange does, anything is possible now. So I’m completely open to it.”
