Sony was Metacritic's highest-rated publisher in 2022

There is no denying that Sony has an enviable first-party roster. Take The Last of Us for example. Thanks to the immense success of the recent HBO series, it’s practically one of the most talked about franchises on the planet right now.

Last year saw God of War Ragnarök sweep up at The Game Awards. It didn’t win GOTY, but could Sony take the award home this time around? The big contender has got to be Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. Set to launch later this year, one of the game’s actors seemingly leaked the release window earlier this week. Personally, I’m really excited for Horizon Forbidden West: Burning Shores which is less than a month away from release. The PS5-exclusive takes place after Forbidden West so you’ll need to have that game’s final main mission wrapped up in order to play. I digress. My point is, it really is no surprise that Sony was Metacritic’s highest-rated publisher in 2022.

Take a look at the trailer for Horizon Forbidden West: Burning Shores below.

As reported by VGC, Sony topped the list of publishers ahead of Paradox Interactive, Activision Blizzard, Focus Entertainment and Take-Two Interactive. Sony’s 2022 line-up included God of War Ragnarök, The Last of Us Part I, Horizon Forbidden West, and Gran Turismo 7 so it’s easy to see why it dominated. A ranked points system was used to calculate the list.

Publishers were judged by the average Metacritic score for their games, combined with the percentage of scored games with positive reviews (75 or higher), the percentage of scored games with negative reviews (49 or lower), and the number of ‘great’ games published (90 or higher). Sony ended up with a score of 85.6 with Paradox following in second with 81.6

The list was topped by Microsoft the year before but they were absent from this year’s final ranking after what was an exceptionally quiet year for Xbox. Nintendo came in 12th place.
