'Sonic The Hedgehog 2' Stars Reveal Their Favourite Video Games

The voice of Sonic is a far bigger gamer than anyone expected

The second Sonic The Hedgehog movie comes out this Friday (1 April), and we’ve been excited to get our first look at Tails and Knuckles on the big screen.

In our Sonic The Hedgehog 2 review, Mourad El-Dine Abdou praises the film for being “hilarious, full of action, brimming with references to the games, and undoubtedly better than the first film”. While there are still a few days left until the public can see the blue blur for themselves, we got to sit down with the voice of Sonic, Ben Schwartz, and his partner in preventing crime, James Marsden. While the interview was supposed to be about the movie, the pair couldn’t stop talking about their favourite video games.

Check out our full interview with the boys from Sonic 2 and find out if you have the same taste in games.

Schwartz opened the interview with a quick fire, “Do you want me to talk about video games because you’re a gaming guy, or no?” From that moment on, discussion turned distinctly towards gaming.

Of the duo, Schwartz is definitely the more avid gamer who was ecstatic to reel off a list of his favourite RPGs. “I love a role-playing game,” he told a slightly confused Marsden part way through naming some all-time classics. Sonic’s sidekick is familiar with his on-screen partner’s side-scrolling games, but admitted he hasn’t spent so much time with them personally, “I’m 70, so when Sonic came in, I thought it’s too old for a 45-year-old to be playing video games. I had to give it up. Get a real job.”

Despite pretending he’s too old for the Sega Mega Drive, Marsden could quite easily name more than a few games from the Nintendo 64 which made up his gaming history. “I think I spent maybe 2% of my life playing it.”

So while they didn’t get too in depth about what making a video game movie is really like, it’s nice to know the man behind the world’s fastest hedgehog knows all the cheat codes to Contra.
