Yes, that’s right, after nine long years, the biggest mystery ever, since the existence of Resident Evil 7: Biohazard has been answered. Well, kinda.

As great a game as Resident Evil 4 is, with its heavy focus on action (with some horror), Capcom believed that the way forward for the series was to crank up the action by 10. As such, the survival horror element that made the Resident Evil series so popular since its inception in 1996 was pretty much nonexistent.

Don’t get me wrong, as much as we appreciate the fun that the likes of Resident Evil 5 had to offer, the series wasn't the same. There was a glimmer of hope with 2012’s Resident Evil Revelations, and while it did bring back some of the horror formula, it still never quite nailed it.

However, when Resident Evil 7: Biohazard arrived in 2017, it brought back horror and tension by the dozen. A new first-person perspective brought the horror up close and personal; it has a haunting location, somewhat reminiscent of the OG mansion, and a new story that kept us hooked from start to finish. Many credit RE7 for getting the series back on track.

What Is the Unanswered Mystery of Resident Evil 7?

No, it’s not why Chris Redfield has had yet another face change, or were the Baker family really good dinner hosts when not infected, nor is it why the wrecked ship segment towards the end of the game was so damn long! The mystery that has finally been answered is why there are so many pairs of shoes in the Baker home!

“I was playing Resident Evil 7. I completed a pretty big chunk of the game so far,” explained Redditor Upper-Mango1617

“Well, with the help of the snake key i managed to get into the kids' room on the second floor. Normally, I was looking for bullets and other things, but when I opened a drawer, this is what I found .....6 pairs of Jordan 4, and 12 independent sneakers.

“Why would an average (not so average looking at their house and property all around ) Louisiana family have such a thing because a pair of J4 is around $200, $1200 worth of shoes for kids.”

Redditor Try to Explain the Unsolved Mystery

“You're not the first kidnapped victim,” replied kekk0407.

“Lucas [Baker] was a psychopath. He probably stole them. Or kept them as trophies when he was killed,” suggested death556.

“They kidnapped many people. The shoes may belong to their victims,” added freetotebag.

Lucas collecting the shoes of the victims certainly makes a lot of sense. Unlike Jack and Marguerite Baker, who were seemingly very sweet people before they were corrupted by Eveline, several in-game documents suggest that Lucas was already evil before Eveline came into their home. So it’s likely that Lucas would have started collecting the shoes of his victims long before he was ever corrupted.

Resident Evil 7: Biohazard is out now on PC, PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo Switch.
