Red Dead Redemption 3 might be years away, but this open-world zombie game might scratch your itch for another Western undead nightmare.

Rockstar Games haven’t even finished Grand Theft Auto VI yet, and many fans are already looking ahead at a third entry in the Red Dead Redemption series, one thing at a time guys…

Though it’s hard to blame fans eager for another Western adventure, Red Dead Redemption 2 absolutely spoiled us with its story, gorgeous visuals, minute details and complete gameplay freedom. It’s no wonder that it’s retained an active and healthy playerbase nearly five years after release.

Unfortunately, It’s been over a decade of waiting for the next Grand Theft Auto, meaning Red Dead Redemption 3 is a very long way off, to put it lightly.

Though if you’re dying for another game that puts you in the danger-filled wild West, you’re in luck, as Western Rye, an early access title on Steam, might be just what you’re looking for to pass some time till Rockstar picks up the cowboy hats again.

Western Rye, developed by Nixalon Studios, is a Western zombie survival game set for an official release this August. It’s kind of like if Red Dead Redemption met Minecraft, involving a heavy emphasis on crafting and survival in an unforgiving wild West. Players will need to scavenge in the harsh environment, commune with potential friends and foes, fight off infected and construct buildings and supplies to assist in survival.

It looks like a lot of fun, and the visuals are very impressive, making the ruthless desert you’ll be exploring look vast and menacing. The interactions with NPCs sound particularly interesting as it seems you’ll have to choose your allies carefully if you want to survive longer. The base building also looks like a lot of fun, with preset buildings that can be internally customised with whatever furnishings or lighting you want.

If Western Rye has caught your eye, you can check it out on Steam, where it’s currently available as an early-access game. It doesn’t sound like Rockstar will be bringing Undead Nightmare DLC back for Red Dead Redemption 2, so this might be your best bet for another zombies vs cowboys adventure.
