Red Dead Redemption 3 to leave out iconic character: ‘his story has been told’

He shan't return

It’s only a matter of time until we get Red Dead Redemption 3, but don’t count on it bringing back this iconic character.

Now nearly seven years old, Red Dead Redemption 2 fans have long awaited the next follow-up by Rockstar Games.

Considering both Red Dead Redemption games form a tight duology, a possible third game might be tricky to do without completely changing the location and characters. It’d effectively be a reboot.

This is fine, considering Red Dead Redemption itself was a reboot of the real first game in the series, Red Dead Revolver.

Whatever happens, it looks like one iconic character from Red Dead Redemption 2 probably won’t be returning for the next game, if confirmation from the voice actor is anything to go by.

“Do you think there is anything about RDR III, about the foundation of the gang or Arthur will be the main character or side character?” a Red Dead fan asked Roger Clark on X (formerly Twitter).

“I’m certain we will see RDR3 one day,” Clark responded. “When that will be - I have absolutely no idea. Don’t count on Arthur’s involvement either. His story has been told, I feel.”

Clark played Arthur Morgan, the protagonist of Red Dead Redemption 2. So it sounds like he’d know more about Arthur’s possible appearance in Red Dead Redemption 3 than anyone else besides Rockstar itself.

Of course, bringing Arthur back for a straight-up sequel to Red Dead Redemption 2 would be difficult, considering, y’know, how that game ends.

A prequel of sorts could make it possible though, and there are plenty of opportunities to take the characters. Since Red Dead Redemption 2 depicts the fall of the Van Der Linde gang, the third game could be about its rise.

Thinking about it, it’d be cool to have each new Red Dead game be a prequel, and set it slightly further back in the overall timeline. It might even eventually tie-in with Red Dead Revolver, which was set in roughly the 1880s.

For now though, it looks like Rockstar has its hands full with GTA 6. So we’ll be waiting a while for Red Dead Redemption 3.
