Red Dead Redemption 2 players discuss a mechanic with the game's huge map, and it might be a bigger issue than you think.

When it comes to gorgeous open worlds packed full of content to keep you entertained for months on end, years even, it doesn't get much better than Rockstar Games’ Red Dead Redemption 2.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is widely considered to be one of the greatest video games of all time, as reflected by its all-mighty score of 97 on Metacritic, solidifying itself amongst the greats.

“America, 1899. Arthur Morgan and the Van der Linde Gang are outlaws on the run,” reads the synopsis of Red Dead Redemption 2.

“With federal agents and the best bounty hunters in the nation massing on their heels, the gang must rob, steal, and fight their way across the rugged heartland of America in order to survive. As deepening internal divisions threaten to tear the gang apart, Arthur must make a choice between his own ideals and loyalty to the gang who raised him.”

Whether it’s the heartwarming, turned heartbreaking main story, its many immersive side quests, exploring its gorgeous open world, hunting for treasure and legendary animals, it doesn't get much better than what’s been crafted here by Rockstar Games.

However, with a map as huge as Red Dead Redemption 2, the way in which time passes may work differently than most other open-world games, as discussed by gamers on Reddit.

“The gang's first hideout is hilariously close to Blackwater,” said Redditor Lefthook16, kicking off the discussion on the thread.

“In my second playthrough, I was roaming around shooting people as you do in a game like this. About a half-day ride southwest of the first camp is Blackwater. I went through the mountains in a blizzard just to end up about 20 miles away from Blackwater.... I never noticed that.”

The Red Dead Redemption 2 map is vast and beautiful

In a nutshell, Lieutenant_Joe explains that each next key location is supposed to be multiple days' ride away from the other.

So what may be 20 minutes in real life is potentially more than a day in the world of Red Dead Redemption 2.

“Strawberry is not supposed to feel like it’s two hills and a river away from Blackwater, even though it is. Lagras is not supposed to feel like Saint Denis is right over there across a swamp lake, even though you can totally see it from points in the town,” they explained. “The game’s logic starts to fall apart quickly when you think seriously about space.”

So, there you have it, if you ever wondered how far some places are meant to be in real-life terms, in Red Dead Redemption 2, now we all have a greater understanding.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is out now on PC, PlayStation and Xbox. It’s been heavily rumoured that a remaster might be announced soon. We’ll keep you posted if that announcement is made.
