It’s very hard to create a game that is timeless. It’s not impossible, I should add, but it’s no simple task.

Technology advances quickly. A game that you think looks stunning can look ‘outdated’ just a few years later. It takes a truly exceptional vision to transcend those limitations but every now and then, a game does indeed come along that you just know will continue to find fans, regardless of what year we find ourselves in. Skyrim, Super Mario Bros, Tetris, and Journey all spring to mind as relevant examples. Would you throw Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege on that pile? It’s a tough sell if you ask me, but developers are convinced that the game can “last forever”.

Take a look at the game in action below.

Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege launched back in 2015 and while it continues to boast a solid player base, we’re vastly approaching the point of asking the question of whether the game continues to hold up today or whether it’s time to move on and evolve. As reported by PCGamer, Rainbow Six Siege's creative director Alexander Karpazis said during the recent Six Invitational 2024 there are no plans for a sequel in the works at Ubisoft.

“I can confidently say that we have probably one of the best engines in the world when it comes to live PvP shooters. The team is incredible, and we have a huge engine pipeline team that every single month incrementally improves the way that we can deliver content faster, more robust, more stable, hopefully as much as possible,” Karpazis explained.

He went on to compare making a sequel to a live-service game to redoing your homework: “It can be really frustrating, really costly, and in the end, it doesn’t even give you anything that was a benefit.” He added, “We really do know that this is a game that can last forever with the people and the talent and the tools that we have today." It’s a bold vision, but one that’s to be respected if it can be fulfilled.
