Sony Was ‘More Ready’ For Next-Gen Than Microsoft, Says ‘Control’ Studio

Sony’s single-focus platform makes development so much easier

News from our friends at Finnish studio Remedy Entertainment - makers of our Game of the Year for 2019, Control, as well as Max Payne, Quantum Break and Alan Wake. The company's Thomas Puha has told IGN's Next Gen Console Watch that of the two major gaming console platforms, Sony's PlayStation was the more prepared for the transition to next-gen, than its rival Microsoft's Xbox range.

Puha, who we spoke to last year about the success of Control (ahead of its AWE DLC), has said that Sony was "a bit more ready" with the PlayStation 5 (our review, below) than Microsoft was the Xbox Series X and S, in terms of making development tools available for games-makers at studios like Remedy.

Control suffered some performance issues on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, but really shines on the new, so-called next-gen systems. Puha says of the two platforms' approach to development provision:

"Sony stuck with what worked, their development software and tools were pretty stable, and good pretty early on. Microsoft changed quite a lot of things - which in the long run are probably good, but it was a bigger hurdle for us devs early on because we had to rewrite a bunch of things to take advantage of specific features."

Puha goes on to say that developing for the lesser-powered Xbox Series S is a minor gripe for the studio, too. "The system with the lowest specs does end up dictating a few of the things you're going to do, because you're going to have to run on that system," he said. "You ultimately have to compromise a little bit when you're a smaller studio like us, when you can't spend time making sure all these platforms are super good."

Which sure sounds like, as this generation unfolds, we'll see a number of studios not taking full advantage of what's possible on the Series X console, because of the need to also have their games run well on the Series S. Something to be mindful of, certainly, if you're in the market for either console at the moment.

Puha adds: "I don't envy folks making Halo Infinite." Speaking of which, we also think the next Halo game is make or break for the series, and for its makers at 343 Industries. Fingers crossed it's a memorable one, for the right reasons.
