Thought you were finished with The Last Of Us Part II? Think again, friend. Naughty Dog has confirmed that he critically acclaimed post-apocalyptic sequel is getting a couple of punishing new modes designed to really ramp up the survival element of the brutal action-adventure.

Confirming the news in a blog post, Naughty Dog explained that The Last Of Us Part II will be getting Grounded and Permadeath modes. You can take a look at what exactly to expect from the update, which arrives August 13th, in the trailer below.

The new modes will also be joined by some Uncharted 4-style filters, as well as various gameplay and audio modifiers that change the look and feel of the game, accessible via the Extras menu once you've beaten the game.

Grounded also appeared in the original The Last Of Us as the absolute hardest mode the game had to offer. This was for people who really knew the game inside and out, as the supreme challenge switched off the game's HUD and Listen Mode, and also limited supplies and greatly increased enemy damage. I'd imagine it'll work in almost exactly the same way in The Last Of Us Part II.

Permadeath, meanwhile, is... well, does it really need explaining? You'll be able to turn permanent death on regardless of whichever difficulty setting you're playing the game on. That means once you've died during a playthrough, that's it. Back to the very start. Have fun playing through that thoroughly depressing opening sequence again, I guess.

I would imagine that only the bravest, most foolish of players will attempt to combine Grounded and Permadeath. I'd much rather continue enjoying my life, so I think I'll be staying well away from both modes. It's good to know they're there if I ever do feel the need for an intense challenge, though.

In other The Last Of Us Part II news, we recently got a first look at what appears to be the game's standalone multiplayer expansion, Factions.

In September last year, Naughty Dog confirmed that The Last Of Us Part II wouldn't contain multiplayer like its predecessor, explaining that the multiplayer action the team was working on had become so ambitious that it was clear it needed to be released as a standalone experience.

While the footage that leaked online is very rough, its looks as if this new multiplayer mode has greatly expanded upon the Factions from the first game. Hopefully we'll find out more soon.
