Killzone Fans Fear The Worst After Latest Update

Despite its steady fanbase, it looks like it's the end of the road for Killzone.

Killzone has always been a reliable if mildly underwhelming series, delivering a good dose of first-person shooter fun with each instalment without ever really doing anything groundbreaking. Regardless, Guerrilla Games' Killzone has always performed well commercially, particularly 2013's Killzone Shadow Fall - despite being one of the lowest rated games in the series.

Despite its mixed reviews, Killzone Shadow Fall is one of the best-selling PlayStation 4 games of all time and was a key part of the PlayStation 4's launch line-up, yet in the years since its release, any mention of a new Killzone entry seems to have disappeared into the abyss.

Of course, Guerrilla Games has been pouring all of its resources into the Horizon series, and you might be surprised to see how good Horizon Forbidden West looks on a PlayStation 4. Take a look.

Last year, Killzone fans' hopes appeared to be dashed when Guerrilla retired the Killzone website. Well now, a recent leak seems to confirm that Killzone is gone for good with no chance of a reboot or new instalment. Twitter's oopsleaks states that Killzone is "dead" with Guerrilla instead firmly choosing to focus on other projects.

According to oopsleaks' sources, Guerrilla is opting to work on a third game in the Horizon series plus a VR spin off, online standalone game, or expansion. The studio is also reportedly developing a new competitive multiplayer game, having been in the works for three years.

Multiplayer Shooter

Competitive (hero?) shooter with esports focus. 3 yrs in dev. R6S leads involved. Here my sources differ, one claims that it's a new SOCOM game, the other says that it's set in the Horizon universe. Soon we'll find out what's true. pic.twitter.com/yq5Uml9l6d

As with any reported leak, until anything is actually confirmed by Guerrilla, these rumours have to be taken with a pinch of salt but as a flagship exclusive of PlayStation, it's unsurprising that Guerrilla's sights are firmly set on Horizon. Horizon Forbidden West confidently set up a third game in the series, so much so that it feels like a guarantee even without an official announcement.

As for Killzone, it looks as if it's finally been buried in the PlayStation graveyard but at least we have fond memories, sort of.
