PS5-Exclusive Final Fantasy Game May Be Inspired By Dark Souls

PS5-Exclusive Final Fantasy Game May Be Inspired By Dark Souls

It's going to be one heck of a year for fans.

An unannounced Final Fantasy game may draw a lot of inspiration from an unexpected source - this leaker claims that Square Enix referred to Dark Souls during development.

For clarification, this isn't about Final Fantasy XVI, which was announced last September as a timed console exclusive for the PlayStation 5. Set in the world of Valisthea, six separate factions live in an uneasy peace, yet foster advanced civilisations thanks to the power of the mountainous Mothercrystals. However, the Blight is threatening these fragile foundations and the hero Clive Rosfield must strike back when tragedy befalls him and his younger brother Joshua. Joshua is a Dominant, also known as a person who may summon an Eikon to aid them in battle, and the dark Eikon Ifrit is out of control. It's giving us a much more medieval vibe compared to Eos in the previous game, and it has a provisional rating as an '18', intimating that the stakes are going to be extremely high in this struggle of good against evil.

Final Fantasy XVI might be a ways away, but Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade is landing next month. As an "enhanced and expanded" version of the game that captured the hearts of countless fans, it's surely something to see. Check it out here.

Over the weekend, rumours ran rampant that Square Enix and Sony have a card up their sleeve and this new Final Fantasy title will be exclusive to the PlayStation 5. "I believe you can expect at least one more major FF announcement in addition to updates on the currently announced stuff (XVI/Endwalker/VIIR)," said Navta on Resetera. "It's something new. Not as high-end as FFXVI or Forespoken but certainly more significant than World of FF or a remaster." When pressed, they added that it's "certainly Souls-inspired," and this was corroborated by Souls Hunt. This mystery Final Fantasy PS5 exclusive is apparently being worked on by Team Ninja, whose most recent series was the Souls-inspired Nioh and Nioh 2.

Intriguing. Of course, as neither Square Enix nor Sony have made mention of anything like this, we've got to consider these claims with caution. However, a game like this could be a real breath of fresh air for fans, attract new players to the series, and bulk out that roster of PlayStation 5 exclusives. We'll let you know when we learn more.
