PlayStation 5 RPG to rival Starfield beats Zelda on Metacritic

Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom has been dethroned!

2023 has already been a blessed year for video games and it seems by the time the year is over, things are only going to get better.

From Final Fantasy XVI, the Dead Space and Resident Evil 4 remakes, Metroid Prime Remastered, Street Fighter 6 and more, this year has truly been one of the best in a long time. Sitting at the top of the highest-scoring games on Metacritic is The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom or at least, it was on top.

Check out the Baldur's Gate III trailer below!

As of right now, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom has a mighty score of 96, but it has just been dethroned by what could be the surprise hit of the year, Baldur’s Gate III which currently has a score of 97 from critics. In terms of user scores, Tears of the Kingdom has 8.4, whereas Baldur’s Gate III from Larian Studios has 9.4, so it’s beating the latest Zelda game on two fronts.

At the time of writing, Baldur’s Gate III is only available on PC, with it arriving on PlayStation 5 on 6 September, which just so happens to be the same release date as Starfield. So it will be interesting to see how its score fares when Baldur’s Gate III arrives on consoles.

Speaking of console releases, Baldur’s Gate III is intended to come to Xbox Series X|S. However, due to technical limitations of the Series S, the highly anticipated RPG has been delayed with no solid release date in sight. It is expected to release on Xbox Series X|S in early 2024. As a result, Baldur’s Gate III has temporarily at least become a PS5 exclusive, kind of. This is quite handy for Sony when you consider it will be going toe-to-toe against Bethesda’s Starfield.

It’s certainly an exciting end of the year for fans of the RPG genre.
