Xbox's new PC backwards compatibility is a very good sign for Positron

On July 22, Xbox announced the return of its backwards compatibility program for PC users, and it’s already looking like a soft-launch for the elusive Xbox Positron.

If you aren't up to date, Xbox Positron isn’t the fancy name for Xbox’s new-gen console (though it’s a better name than Xbox One). At the time of writing, that’s still being identified as Project Helix.

Xbox Positron is the rumoured disc-to-digital transfer tool that’ll grant console owners digital licenses in exchange for their discs.

Its existence is yet to be confirmed, but Xbox bringing backwards compatibility to PC is a positive sign of what’s to come.

How PC backwards compatibility would work with Xbox Positron

The way it works is by inserting a disc into your Xbox console. Your console then reads the disc’s information and Positron turns that info into a digital license. In theory, this means it’ll work on your PC, mobile phone, or any other device the company used to deem an Xbox.

On July 22, Xbox launched a handful of OG Xbox titles on PC, and if you bought those digitally on your console, you should be able to play them at no additional cost on your rig.

The included titles are: BLiNX: The Time Sweeper, Conker: Live and Reloaded, Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge, and Fuzion Frenzy.

However, the Xbox Series X/S supports your physical OG Xbox games too. Your disc copy of Max Payne, for instance, can be inserted into your console and be played as normal. Can you tell where we’re going with this?

Backwards compatibility on PC is an excellent testing ground for the elusive Positron feature. When it launches, you could insert your copy of Conker: Live & Reloaded into your console, have it converted to a digital license, and then play it on your PC.

Don’t worry about your discs though. It’s said the digital license won’t replace discs or make them obsolete, because if you sell it or give it away and someone tries to install it to their console, they’ll gain a license whilst you lose yours. It should have no effect on the second-hand market unlike what PlayStation is doing in 2028.

Obviously, take all of this with a pinch of salt as there’s a lot of speculation involved, but the pieces are really starting to fall into place.

With the exception of soul-crushing layoffs, Xbox has been trying to do better for its fans. A greater focus on first-party exclusives, improvements to hardware/software and now more options for gamers on PC are meaningful changes. It’s just a shame they’ve been soured by the amount of pressure studios are now under to perform.

Xbox Positron could be another big win for Xbox especially in light of PlayStation’s physical media cull.

On paper, it sounds like the best of both worlds. Digital licences that give you more choice of platform without making the physical media obsolete.
