If it’s not bad enough that Microsoft has raised the prices of its Xbox consoles for a third time, it’s now discontinuing one of its most consumer-friendly models.
This console generation, more than any other, is the only one that has gradually gotten more expensive the older it gets.
In previous generations, the older a console gets, it will typically drop in price, with its manufacturer knowing that gamers will be preparing to spend their hard-earned cash on a new console with the next generation just around the corner. But nope, “hold my beer”, says the ninth gen.
In May 2025, Microsoft significantly hiked the prices of the Xbox Series X|S by as much as $100, and this worldwide increase understandably angered a lot of gamers.

Just a few months later, Microsoft raised Xbox Series X|S prices again. Granted, it wasn't as much as the previous hike, but an additional $50 on top of the increase we just had wasn't seen as very consumer-friendly, to put it mildly.
Not long after that debacle, Microsoft increased the price of its Xbox Game Pass subscription service by as much as 50% in some regions, before recently reducing its cost by 23% with one major caveat.

Yes, that’s right. In just over a year, Microsoft has hit gamers with another Xbox Series X|S price hike, and what is quite possibly its most unfriendly consumer act in years.
The news of Xbox receiving its third price raise in just over a year was officially confirmed on Xbox Wire. The price of the Xbox Series S in the US will go up by $100, and the price of the Xbox Series X will increase by $150. This increase will also impact other regions across the world, but prices will differ depending on the currency.

“Unfortunately, console storage and memory prices have increased by more than 2.5x, and we expect another doubling by the fall of 2027,” read the Xbox Wire post. “The entire consumer electronics industry is struggling with the current components crisis, but the effects are particularly hard on consoles.”
However, Microsoft has announced interest-free payment plans to help gamers purchase the overpriced Xbox Series X/S consoles. How kind.
Thankfully, if you wanted to buy a new Xbox Series X/S console, there is still time to pick one up before the price increase, because the hike does not come into effect until 1 August, 2026. So you have just over a month before the consoles become more expensive.
Not content with hitting gamers with a third console price hike, Microsoft has also confirmed that it will be delisting the 2TB Xbox Series X. This model is particularly helpful because you get twice as much internal storage as the other Series X model.
There still may be some Xbox Series X 2TB consoles floating about. So, if you’ve ever been tempted to pick one up, if you do see one in the wild, you might want to splash the cash before it's gone forever. Then, that model will likely fall into the hands of third-party sellers at an even higher price.
What makes this latest price increase all the more baffling is that just a few weeks ago, the new Xbox CEO, Asha Sharma, suggested that consoles may drop in price. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see what happens in the 10th generation.
