A new game coming to Xbox looks to be a treat for fans of The Elder Scrolls and Dark Souls. It could be an indie RPG for the ages.
When it comes to fantasy RPGs, there aren’t many that do it better than Bethesda with its The Elder Scrolls series. Since the 90s, we’ve been on so many epic adventures, taking multiple arrows to the knee and slaying mythical dragons, our tales will be told for generations to come (probably).
Then we have FromSoftware, a developer that knows how to craft brutal action RPGs like no other, continually pushing gamers' skills to the limits and a winning formula that tons of other studios have tried to replicate, but arguably, never quite nails it as such as the studio that’s brought us Dark Souls, Bloodborne and Elden Ring.
As brought to our attention by Jez Corden on Twitter, the game in question is from the indie studio Lovely Hellplace and is called Dread Delusion.
In a preview of the game, Corden said: “Dread Delusion eschews the modern norms of the RPG genre to create something that’s both nostalgic and refreshing at the same time.”

Straight off the bat, just looking at its gameplay trailer, this new RPG gives me all the OG PlayStation nostalgia vibes. If Bethesda and FromSoftware collaborated in the 90s, the result would be Dread Delusion.
“Dread Delusion is an open-world RPG brimming with strange places and dark perils,” reads the synopsis of the game. “Carve your own path through the flying continents of a shattered land. Discover curious towns, unearth occult secrets, master powerful magic - and change the world through your choices.”
Dread Delusion was in Steam early access, but it is no longer, and best of all, it’s also now available on Xbox and PlayStation with a very modest RRP of £13.99.
Well, that depends on where you get your information. For example, on Metacritic, Dread Delusion aligns with critics and users scoring a decent 73 and 7.5, respectively. Whereas on Steam, it’s rated “Very Positive” from nearly 4,000 reviews. Reading between the lines, there’s a good chance you won't be disappointed with this retro-inspired RPG.
Dread Delusion is out now. It might be worth mentioning that it’s not included in Xbox Game Pass or PlayStation Plus at the time of writing.
