Xbox Quietly Adds 7 Free Classics for August

Arcade classics to get you through the summer

We might be approaching the release of GTA 6 and living in the time of technical marvels like Cyberpunk 2077 and Red Dead Redemption 2, but there's still time to kick back and relax with some old school hits.

Thankfully Xbox is here to fill that void with the Xbox Retro Classics range as part of their existing Game Pass subscription service. There are already hundreds of games from times gone by to take advantage of, but seven new titles are now available that should please Atari 2600 lovers.

As first reported by PureXbox, the new games feature five Atari 2600 releases, one from the Amiga and even a standout PC city-builder from the late 1990s.

The full list of games is as follows:

  • Climber 5 (Atari 2600)
  • Private Eye (Atari 2600)
  • The Colonel's Bequest (Amiga)
  • Caesar 3 (Windows 9x)
  • Shootin' Gallery (Atari 2600)
  • Oystron (Atari 2600)
  • Wing War (Atari 2600)

Caesar 3 is the standout, putting players in the role of a Roman governor tasked with establishing cities in the farthest flung corners of the empire. The game was a huge improvement on its predecessor, which came in for a lot of criticism, significantly expanding missions, merging the map for building and combat, and deepening the way citizens are simulated in your settlements.

Another highlight is Wing War, a combat and flight simulator that you might have seen as a child in your local arcade, replete with joystick and flight dashboard.

Our last big recommendation is Private Eye, a fun murder mystery game that lets players choose how to handle the case. Think of it as an early version of L.A. Noire and you should have a great time.

The games are all available now, so you don't have to wait as long as you have an active subscription to Xbox Game Pass.
