Halo 1 remake might be skipping series' most iconic feature

Following reports that Halo: Combat Evolved will be receiving the remaster treatment for a second time, a new rumour suggests it might also be missing one of the series’ most important features.

Last year, it was reported that Microsoft was in the early stages of development for a remake of the first three Halo games, potentially bringing the series to PlayStation for the first time.

Those rumours were corroborated earlier this year, when Xbox teased some kind of new Halo project that would be releasing in 2026.

YouTube channel Rebs Gaming has now shared a new rumour from “two sources with connections to Halo developers”, suggesting that the upcoming remake of Halo: Combat Evolved could be launching with only the campaign, skipping the multiplayer portion entirely.

“Both [sources] say the Combat Evolved remake is planned for 2026, and have not heard anything about multiplayer which means it might be campaign-only,” Rebs Gaming claims.

“One thing I can confirm is that there weren't any Halo projects besides Infinite and Project Tatanka that were being developed before 2023.

"This information comes from a former Halo Infinite campaign developer, and one of my sources for the Combat Evolved remake information says development started in 2023.”

Of course, this doesn’t necessarily mean that multiplayer isn’t planned, but it also doesn’t confirm that it’s included either.

And it wouldn’t be the first time a video game remaster has cut the multiplayer portion out. In the last five years alone, The Last of Us Part 1, Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection, Red Dead Redemption, and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Remastered all launched on new systems without their multiplayer components.

Considering how popular Halo multiplayer has been over the past two decades though, it would be a massive shame to leave it out here.

This is especially important if this really is the series’ debut on a Sony console, as Rebs Gaming's source also claims the series "might release on PlayStation".
