Many of today’s most popular RPGs opt for large, sprawling open-worlds that can feel a tad overwhelming. In fact, Crimson Desert is a perfect example.
Plenty of gamers, though, yearn for the simpler pixel-art RPGs of yesteryear, as popularised by the Final Fantasy and The Legend of Zelda franchises.
Well, if that’s you, you might want to check out Whispers Between Worlds, a gorgeous classic RPG adventure that’s just dropped a free demo on PC storefront Steam.
Developed by gibbletiggle, Whispers Between Worlds currently remains without a release date.

It follows Yuri who’s born with the ability to see spirits and banished to the Spirit Realm “for reasons yet unknown”.
“On his journey back to the realm of the living, will Yui be able to temper his resolve, and confront his shaken past?”
Developers describe the game as a “story-driven puzzle RPG” that touches upon themes of hope, responsibility, and repentance.
Gamers Can Sample A Couple of Hours of the Game Via Steam
“The Spirit Realm is interwoven with a myriad of lifetimes and stories,” a synopsis reads.
“And once Yui reaches his fated encounter with the one lying at the bleeding heart of this realm, will he prevail, or despair?”
Whispers Between Worlds makes use of a turn-based combat system that incorporates quick-time events.

Players will face off against a variety of foes, using unique alchemy based attacks.
These can be bolstered using Blessings. Very little info is provided on Blessings but they sound like perks that allow you to tailor the alchemy to your combat style.
You can “befriend dozens of peculiar spirits”, recording entries in your sketchbook as you also unearth solutions to various puzzles and traps.
One rather unique feature reads, “Cross-dressing! Wait, what?” so it sounds as if Whispers Between Worlds isn’t a game that’s afraid to have fun.
The demo appears to offer around one to two hours of gameplay, so that’s plenty of time to get an idea whether the full release is something you might be interested in.
As mentioned, that full release lacks a release date but we know it's only currently coming to PC.
You can wishlist the game if you do want to be kept up to date on its progress.
There’s no player consensus yet on the demo so you’ll have to go in dark but that’s often more fun.
After all, if Whispers Between Worlds ends up being a banger, you’ll get bragging rights and the power to tell your friends that you discovered it first.
