If you’re a fan of the old-school The Legend of Zelda games, then you’re gonna want to check out this PC RPG freebie.

Since its inception in 1986 on the NES, The Legend of Zelda series has come a long way and is without question one of the biggest video game franchises of all time.

As far as the series has come, especially in recent years with the arrival of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, I’ll always favour something a little more old-school for this beloved Nintendo franchise. It’s why 1992’s A Link to the Past on the SNES will forever be my all-time favourite.

Thankfully, we can revisit the vast majority of The Legend of Zelda games across all generations with relative ease with subscription services such as Nintendo Switch Online.

What’s more, if you want to play something new, but a little old-school, then the ever-vibrant indie community has you covered.

One such game, as brought to our attention by DSOGaming, is called Echo Isle, developed and published by Josh Koenig Games.

If you’re a fan of the retro era, in particular, The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening, then this new indie game could be your jam.

“Take on the role of Aster, a star warrior sent to banish the darkness! Wielding your trusty sword, embark on a daring mini-adventure across a cosy island. Delve into ancient ruins, battle fierce monsters, and unlock new abilities... all to collect the four legendary Echo Stones,” reads the synopsis on Steam.

The gameplay trailer for Echo Isle looks like it's ripped straight from the 80s, not only with the graphics, but also its gameplay is inspired by the OG Zelda games and the nostalgic sprite sound effects.

It’s perhaps also worth mentioning that given the inspiration of the game, the toll it will take on a PC is very limited, so hopefully, most modern systems will be able to run Echo Isle.

At the time of writing, Echo Isle does not have a release date, but you can at least download and play its free demo today. Just to note, the demo link is over on the left of the Steam page, instead of the typical centre.

Also, be sure to add Echo Isle to your Steam wishlist to be notified of its launch.
