The Witcher meets Assassin's Creed in gorgeous new Steam game

Delve into Welsh mythology

If you’re looking for a new narrative-driven epic set within an enchanted realm, then you, my friend, have come to the right place.

Major AAA launches can often dominate the headlines, so it’s important that we set aside time to shine the spotlight on upcoming indies.

Today, it’s Tales from the Mabinogion that I was to draw your attention to.

Developed by solo dev Stevan Anastasoff, Tales from the Mabinogion is a wonderful atmospheric story-driven adventure game inspired by Wales’ rich history and mythology.

“Venture into the enchanted realms of Ancient Wales in Tales from the Mabinogion. As King Pryderi, navigate mystical forests, rugged mountains, and captivating coastlines,” the synopsis teases.

“Unravel ancient secrets, confront dark forces, and save your kingdom from a looming, catastrophic curse.”

It’s certainly grabbed by attention.

Take a look at Tales from the Mabinogion in action below.

A sorcerer has unleashed a cursed fog upon the Welsh Kingdom of Dyfed.

It’s up to you to uncover the origins of the curse but, of course, that means venturing into the fog where you’ll have to avoid the fleeing wildlife.

If you’re not familiar with the Mabinogion, this is the first written work in the Western fantasy literary tradition, so Tales from the Mabinogion draws on the genre’s roots.

The game features Welsh as a primary language, which is always lovely to see, but so too can players enjoy subtitled English should that be necessary.

The narrative has been adapted by former Games Workshop designer Gav Thorpe while Welsh folk muscision Oliver Wilson-Dickson provides the soundtrack.

And if you recognise the name of dev Stevan Anastasoff, he’s worked on major franchises including Assassin’s Creed, Warhammer Online, and For Honor.

Tales from the Mabinogion remains without a release date for now but by the looks of things, this is undoubtedly one to keep an eye on.
