Upcoming soulslike RPG Valor Mortis has dropped a free taster on PC storefront Steam ahead of its launch later this year.
Developed by One More Level, Valor Mortis is set within a supernatural version of Napoleonic Europe, a period Assassin’s Creed Unity fans will most definitely be familiar with.
In terms of gameplay, though, Valor Mortis is far more in line with the likes of Dark Souls and Elden Ring.
Expect brutal skirmishes and formidable boss fights.

“You are William, a soldier of the Grande Armée brought back from a battlefield grave,” the synopsis begins.
“But the Europe you awaken to is not the one you sacrificed for.
“A mysterious plague now sweeps the continent, and you have been reborn with its corrupting power pulsing through your veins.”
Played from a first-person perspective, players will work their way through putting a stop to Napoleon’s Eternal Guard, uncovering “environmental secrets” along the way, which “may increase your chances of survival”.

Given that Valor Mortis is coming from the creators of Ghostrunner, expectations are pretty high surrounding the title.
It’s due to land on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC on 24 September. Yes, that’s yet another game for September, avoiding GTA VI’s November launch window.
Ahead of that date, Steam users can actually sample a slice of the game early. Unfortunately, the demo has not yet been confirmed for console.
“After months of preparation, now is the time to serve your Emperor. The Valor Mortis demo is available right now,” devs wrote on Steam
“This is our first time going completely open and public with access to the game.
“We believe we have created a unique soulslike game, with a dash of FPS and even platforming action from our past Ghostrunner titles.
“At the core, Valor Mortis is a challenging experience, so this demo is also our way of fine-tuning that difficulty.”
The demo grants access to two modified versions of levels that appear in the final game.
The first of those is a “ravaged battlefield” that featured in a playtest last year. This one serves as a tutorial for the game’s combat system.
Even if you did partake in that former playtest, devs have refined and polished every aspect of the title, so the level should feel much better this time around.
The second level is new and “expands the game’s scope dramatically”.
“The bridge to the Lighthouse has been destroyed, and you’ll need to use your transmutation powers to traverse the broken cobblestones,” devs tease.
Bringing back some of Ghostrunner’s traversal, players will be able to grapple, wall run, and swing, which you’ll be able to test out here.
The level also features new weapons in the form of the Rapier, the Musket, and “a new shield transmutation”.
“More enemies, more challenges, and more gameplay variety are what we wanted to show in this second level of the demo.”
The demo will then end with a survey, allowing you to feed back to One More Level ahead of launch.
Valor Mortis is definitely a promising title, so this is a great opportunity to be a part of helping it deliver.
