Steam’s brand-new free RPG is officially a massive hit

Looking for a new MMORPG? Throne And Liberty may be for you

Looking for something new to play that’s totally free?

NCSOFT’s Throne And Liberty has finally landed, and it’s already dominating on the Steam chart.

Already, according to SteamDB, Throne And Liberty is topping the ‘Trending’ chart, with a 24-hour peak of 301,023 players.

It’s not on the ‘Most Played’ chart at the time of writing, with around 13,500 current in-game players, but I’m sure it will be once again by the end of the day.

Player count, of course, fluctuates depending on which time zones are awake.

Regardless though, it’s clear to see that Throne And Liberty is off to a prosperous start, despite its rather mixed reviews.

If you’re unaware, Throne And Liberty is an MMORPG.

Take a look at the game in action below.

Taking place in the open world of Solisium, Throne And Liberty will see players “scale expansive mountain ranges for new vantage points, scan open skies, traverse sprawling plains, [and] explore a land full of depth and opportunity”.

“Adapt your fight to survive and thrive through strategic decisions in PvP, PvE or both as you encounter evolving battlefields impacted by weather, time of day, and other players. There is no single path to victory as you seek to defeat Kazar and claim the throne while keeping rival guilds at bay,” reads the synopsis.

Over on Metacritic, the game secured a respectable score of 75.

Users are far more critical though, with Metacritic’s userscore sitting at 4.9 and the Steam reviews classifying as ‘Mixed’.

The more condemnatory user reviews praised the game at a surface level but called it “mediocre” and “clunky” upon diving further in.

Reviewers also noted that Throne And Liberty doesn’t exactly reinvent the genre but if you are an MMORPG fan, you’ll likely find something to enjoy here.

As I said, Throne And Liberty is free-to-play so there’s no harm in giving it a go.

There are paid ‘celebration packs’ should you want to spend money on the game, but this is by no means necessary.
