This Steam shooter can be described as a 9/10 game, and best of all, you can download and play it for free right now.

So many times we’ve watched a trailer, whether it’s cinematic, gameplay or a bit of both, and when it comes to release, it’s a complete letdown. Not only have we wasted energy being hyped, time spent playing the game, but we’ve also thrown our money down the proverbial drain.

Thankfully, free playable demos and trials can save us some money, as they often give us the best indication if a particular game is worth us picking up. That being said, that concept is still not fail-proof, especially if we’ve only been able to sample the one good section of said game.

That being said, if we can play a game for free, and one that looks to be a total blast, well, you can’t go much wrong with that. One such game is called Darkenstein 3D, and as the name of the game suggests, it’s inspired by the retro classics, Wolfenstein 3D and Return to Castle Wolfenstein.

“Step into the chaos of Darkenstein 3D, a bullet-dodging retro FPS set deep behind enemy lines,” reads the synopsis of the game developed by Rowye.

“Inspired by the brutal pace of Return to Castle Wolfenstein and the glory days of late 90s shooters, this game blends secrets, explosive physics, and a story driven by desperation… and a dog.”

Judging by its gameplay trailers, Darkenstein 3D looks like an absolute treat, and with a “Very Positive” rating on Steam, you know it should be time well spent.

Here’s what some of the Steam user reviews had to say:

“If John Wick were a metal head in 1940, it would pretty much sum up the game. When will people learn not to mess with a man's dog?” wrote M'aiq the Liar. “In all seriousness, this is awesome with a Doom-like soundtrack, faithful to its inspirations (Wolfenstein), decent mechanics, and a sense of humour any 14-year-old boy will laugh at; it's a blast to play.”

“It's an honest and loving tribute to the OG of FPSs. It can be difficult, just like it used to be before free-aim came along, but it's fair,” said Check-m8.

“For a free FPS game, I didn't expect it to be this damn good! This actually could've passed as a real Wolfenstein game. I often kept laughing as I was playing the game. Other than a moving glitch, I had a lot of fun,” explained XboxClown89.

So, what are you waiting for? Go download Darkenstein 3D right now!
