Showcasing an ‘overwhelmingly positive’ rating on Steam and costing absolutely nothing to play, this hit title is guaranteed to blow your mind before, after, and during playing.

Described as a “dark-fantasy, turn-based, retro-fusion of classic turn-based RPGs and roguelikes”, Moonring is a 2023 release which is still managing to take Steam by storm.

Why, you may ask?

Well, the title by Fluttermind just so happens to be completely free to play even though it offers over 20+ hours of gameplay according to HowLongToBeat.

Presented in a unique neon aesthetic, Moonring was first released back in 2023 and was created by the co-creator of Xbox’s Fable franchise.

“Five hundred years ago, the land of Caldera was plunged into endless darkness. Decades later, five moons rose in the sky, bringing light to the world and strange Gods with it. With them came the Dreams: calls to Devotion promising supernatural Gifts,” the official Steam synopsis reads.

“Thus, the new Calderan civilisation was born; a world of Devotion and Dreamers, Gods and Gifts, with a Dreamless Archon acting as the Gods' mortal representative. But Archons are not eternal, and a successor must be found.”

Players will take on the role of a Dreamless One who is free to choose their own destiny and ask questions that none have ever dared to before.

Inspired by the classics, Moonring will take you to a hand-designed world where you will travel, trade, sneak and sail across the epic land of Caldera.

Since its release, Moonring has continued to surprise fans thanks to how much it offers whilst asking for nothing in return.

So much so that one player took to the Steam forums to ask, “Why is this free?

I would have gladly paid 2.99-4.99 USD for it.”

Luckily, developer Fluttermind had an answer.

“It's free because I honestly thought nobody would want to play it.

And it ran fine on my machine with zero bugs.

At no point did I think I'd have hundreds of thousands of players, nor see the huge variety of bugs they've all found. No cynical reasoning at all. I was just... unprepared.”

Moonring is free to download on PC (Steam) and Mac right now.
