It’s been a while since the tower defence genre was flourishing, and if you feel the need to scratch that itch, then this new Steam game could be just the ticket.
A free demo has appeared on Steam for a game called Gnomes, which was released back in April, to waves of positive reviews.
With gorgeous colourful visuals evoking the golden age of home computing in the early 1990s, Gnomes has a very simple premise.
The goal is to prevent goblins taking over the landscape by collecting resources and creating the perfect defence.

Using procedurally generated maps, no two games will ever be the same, but the core gameplay loop remains one of setting up your best defensive gnomes to protect your way of life.
Currently sitting on an Overwhelmingly Positive rating from players, after over 1,000 reviews, it’s clear this is both engaging and challenging.
With a roguelike edge, Gnomes is a careful balance of risk and reward, and it’s wowing everyone who plays.
“This Game caught me off guard by how much I enjoyed it. Solid Game play, graphics that are quite cosy and sharp,” said one player.

“The game loop is just perfect,” claims a player who loves the taxing tactics.
Another user who has put over 60 hours into the game, so far, says the daily challenges keep them coming back, and is happy to say, “This game is a 10/10 in my book.”
I had no idea this game existed before today, and as a fan of both tower defence and roguelikes, I’ve dived right in and bought a copy.
If you enjoy the demo, Gnomes is currently reduced, and it’s cheaper than a meal at McDonald's.

According to some players, Gnomes runs great on Steam Deck, too, so if that’s your platform of choice, don’t miss out.
