A new indie game breaks out on Steam, and it could be the next surprise hit of 2026. Oh, and it can cost less than a cup of coffee.
Over the years, we’ve had some fantastic indie games break out on Steam that have taken the video game industry by storm. Some of the games include the likes of Palworld, Dave the Diver, Balatro, Schedule 1 and many more. Now, it seems like we may have another surprise hit on our hands.
The indie game in question is Meccha Chameleon, developed and published by the indie studio, lemorion_1224. At the time of writing, this new Steam game, which was released on 10 June 2026, is priced at a mere £5.29/$5.99.
It’s basically a hide-and-seek game, but similar to prop hunt games that you might have seen in some first-person shooters. Players find a location, paint over their avatar and hope that they’re not discovered by other players in the map. It’s a very simple concept, but it looks like an absolute blast.
“Paint yourself to blend in! Meccha Chameleon is a new sensation hide-and-seek game where you paint your white body to mimic the stage,” reads the synopsis of the game on Steam. “Spot, pose, and artistic skill are keys to survival. Deceive Seekers with techniques that put chameleons to shame! Supports public matches and streaming.”

According to the aggregate website, SteamDb, which calculates the player numbers for Steam games in real-time, shows some quite incredible numbers for Meccha Chameleon.
As I write this article, there are just under 78,000 players in the game, and its all-time concurrent peak (which is also in the last 24 hours) is at just under 245,000. These are Steam numbers that some major AAA games could only dream of.
Meccha Chameleon currently has a “Very Positive” rating on Steam, taken from over 5,740 user reviews.
“Awesome game, awesome concept. Just needs some polishing. Now that you have 1,000,000 copies sold, let's see some improvements,” suggested Crunkenstein.
“Ultra fun. Couldn't ask more for this price,” declared JRX.
“My mates and I had a blast playing this game,” wrote RavenBoi021. “We stayed up playing until 1 a.m., just having a good time and laughing at each other's horrible paint jobs.”
Some users have reported much-needed fixes such as the invite system, the user interface and general bugs, but by and large, it’s loved across the Steam community. That being said, this is a small indie game, so some issues are expected. However, hopefully, the community feedback will be addressed by the developer in due course.
