If you want to claim one of the most beloved shooters of its generation on Steam, then it’s your lucky day but you don’t have long to make it yours.

The free game in question is 2012’s Borderlands 2, developed by Gearbox Software and published by 2K, originally released on PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 before arriving on other platforms over the years.

At launch, Borderlands 2 received a respectable score of 89 from critics, and 8.2 from users on the aggregate website, Metacritic. So you know this game is more than worth your free time, especially if you’re into looter shooters.

“A new era of shoot and loot is about to begin. Play as one of four new vault hunters facing off against a massive new world of creatures, psychos and the evil mastermind, Handsome Jack,” reads the synopsis of Borderlands 2 on Steam.

“Make new friends, arm them with a bazillion weapons and fight alongside them in 4-player co-op on a relentless quest for revenge and redemption across the undiscovered and unpredictable living planet.”

Borderlands 2 is only free on Steam until 6pm today, UK time. So claim it now to avoid the feeling of disappointment when missing out.

If you’re not a PC gamer, then the Borderlands games do tend to appear on subscription services such as PlayStation Plus and Xbox Game Pass from time to time, so it’s worth keeping a lookout.

If you don’t already own Borderlands 2 on PC, hopefully, this should help keep you occupied until Borderlands 4 arrives later in the year.

However, just a heads up. Borderlands 2 has received a lot of negative Steam user reviews recently regarding its updated terms of service. So it might be worth looking into that, just in case.

Borderlands 4 arrives on 12 September 2025 for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S and Nintendo Switch 2.
