If you’re a Need For Speed or Midnight Club fan looking for your next racing fix outside of the usual parameters of Gran Turismo and Forza, I may have just the thing for you.

Tokyo Xtreme Racer is set to launch in early access this month and looks to be an exciting new addition to the racing genre.

Developed by Genki, Tokyo Xtreme Racer will launch in early access on PC via Steam on 23 January - remaining in early access for around four months while developers iron out any potential creases.

You may actually recognise the name Tokyo Xtreme Racer as the franchise, of the same name, has been around for quite some time.

Does anyone remember Genki’s first title, Shutokō Battle '94: Drift King for the Super Famicom in 1994? That’s a throwback.

This does actually mark Genki’s first ‘console’ racer in a whopping 18 years, although I use their phrasing of ‘console’ loosely as Tokyo Xtreme Racer is set to launch on PC only.

This is to say though that the studio is stepping away from mobile releases.

Take a look at Tokyo Xtreme Racer in action below.

When Tokyo Xtreme Racer launches in early access, it’ll allow players to access around half of its playable story.

There will be over 200 rival characters, 50 playable cars, and over 180 kilometres of the Shuto Expressway for you to race across.

The early access period will focus on the ‘Spirit Point Battle’ and car tuning features, with players able to gain skills this time around - something the franchise hasn’t particularly experimented with before.

When Tokyo Xtreme Racer does launch in full, the entire breadth of the narrative will unlock whilst additional character storylines and usable vehicles will become available.

“Tokyo Xtreme Racer is a racing game set in a blocked-off future Tokyo, where players aim to be the fastest by driving their best cars on the highways that weave through the city,” the synopsis teases.

The game is available to wishlist on Steam now if you want to prepare yourself for that early access launch day.
