Holstin is best described as taking The Last of Us’ narrative prowess and mixing it with the Resident Evil franchise’s brand of survival horror.

Developed and set to be published by Sonka, Holstin is an upcoming psychological survival horror set within an “eerie, isolated” 90s Polish town.

Unfortunately for you, the town has been overrun by a mysterious “presence”.

“You’ve come looking for answers, but everyone seems possessed by something foul. Explore the festering town, interrogate locals and fight ungodly manifestations to get to the truth,” teases the synopsis.

Visually, Holstin is worlds apart from those aforementioned franchises, switching out photorealism for stunning retro-inspired pixel graphics.

The end result is a feast for the eyes.

Take a look at Holstin in action below.

“Late November 1992. A small, isolated town in eastern Poland is struck by a foul calamity that slowly begins to consume everyone and everything it touches. This is the last known whereabouts of your friend Bartek before he stopped answering your calls. Now, you need to follow in his footsteps to uncover what brought him to this town in the first place and why he possibly couldn’t ever get out,” the synopsis further teases.

You’ll be tasked with scavenging for supplies, fighting off zombified monsters, and quizzing the locals to get to the bottom of this spine-tingling mystery.

The problem is, it’s not going to be so easy getting answers. The townsfolk are all losing their sanity.

“If you want to understand them, you have to play along with their delusions and understand their inner world. Those still conscious in this void of a town seem like they are suspended between life and death. Their isolated minds slowly edging towards insanity and some of your questions are really starting to get on their shattered nerves.”

The game is fully voiced in both Polish and English.

There’s no set release date for Holstin just yet but you can now enjoy a free demo over on Steam. It’s well worth giving this one a whirl ahead of the full release.
