Steam users can now pick up a brand new 1v1 first-person game set in a haunted mansion.
For the Phasmophobia or Dead By Daylight fans in here, Haunt Out may be the next thing you'll want to try out and we're not just saying that because it's free (but it helps, right?)
Haunt Out is a 1v1 game developed and published by ISART Digital, a private international school focused on games development, 3D animation, and digital visual effects.
Made for virtual reality, the game is set in 1930s Louisiana and has you face off against another player "where every sound, every shadow, and every decision can change the outcome of the hunt."

There are two characters for you to play as in Haunt Out; the Ghost and the Voodoo Priest.
The Ghost is an "elusive entity capable of walking through walls, vanishing into darkness, and manipulating the environment to break the seal keeping it trapped."
On the other hand, playing as the Voodoo Priest will allow you to use "ancient rituals, mystical traps, and spiritual magic to track down the spirit haunting the estate."
As the Steam description reveals, Haunt Out has you "explore a haunted colonial mansion fully designed for VR, filled with physical interactions, narrow corridors, interactive objects, and immersive gameplay mechanics. Every match becomes an intense confrontation between hunter and prey, strategy and instinct."

It's an asymmetrical game, similar to Dead By Daylight, meaning that each side has their own goals and abilities.
For example, the player in control of the Ghost must complete rituals and interact with the environment to weaken the mansion's seal.
They're also invisible to the Priest, but still leave supernatural traces behind. The Ghost can also sprint quickly through hallways, pass through walls, and disable protective talismans.
Meanwhile, the player who controls the Voodoo Priest instead investigates paranormal signs, and uses the voodoo scepter to reveal the Ghost, wherever they're hiding.
You can place traps, activate capture rituals, and use special lights to trigger the exorcism before it's too late.

Haunt Out has an atmosphere "inspired by Louisiana folklore and voodoo legends," if that wasn't clear from the images on the store page.
It emphasises this through "psychological tension, dark humor, and a realistic art direction", with the soundtrack drawing inspiration from haunted house atmospheres and New Orleans jazz, allowing it to mix "unsettling whispers with ethereal sounds to strengthen immersion."
If you'd like to play Haunt Out, you can pick it up now from Steam.
As a VR game, you'll also need to own a compatible virtual reality headset.
The Steam system requirements list support for OpenXR on Meta with Meta Quest 3, but you may also have luck on other VR headsets such as Apple Vision Pro, HTC Vive 2, and the PlayStation VR2. Be sure to double check the compatibility before installing.
