Despite never wanting to find ourselves in a true fight for survival situation, we can’t get enough of survival games. Most likely, it’s the sense of safety you have being in charge of a fictional character that makes it so appealing, which is why we’re diving into another game from this expansive genre.

On Steam there’s a treasure trove of these types of games, one of them being Dread Dawn. Brought to you by indie dev Kloop, this title throws you into the perils of a “quarantined city”, your character a student forced to figure out where it all went wrong.

Your fellow classmates, alongside other survivors you discover along the way, will band together to help you fight your way out and live to tell the tale. It’s all very dramatic. Not quite as gut punching as The Last of Us, but few games are.

What makes Dread Dawn so attractive as a game, besides its familiar premise, is that it marries together several franchises we just can’t stop playing. Namely, Fallout, Days Gone, and Resident Evil; each uniquely challenging and action packed for varying reasons. Yet the common denominator is that strong will to survive against unfavourable odds – Dread Dawn has that thirst for survival in spades.

Currently, you can play this PC game for free via the demo, with the full game due to release at some point later this year (no specific date has been given). Described as a “survival sandbox game” by the devs, this deadly adventure demands you always stay aware, lest the zombies find you.

There’s a lot to like about this game, most prominently, it’s customisation; a feature that will determine if you live or die (in-game, we mean). Should you feel you can answer the call to face another zombie horde, now is the time to test your skills before the full game launches.
