4 Free Steam Games to Kickstart Your 2026, They Actually Look Good

All four of these bangers dropped within roughly the same week

2025 has decided to go out with a bang this year, because four absolute heaters just dropped on Steam… and all four of them are completely free to download and keep forever.

It’s very rare that I get to say this when writing one of these articles, but every single free game on this list is a certified banger.

So, for once, I’m not going to order these free Steam games from best to worst. I highly suggest giving them all a look and seeing if you vibe with them, because (based on the reviews) there’s a strong chance that you will.

First up, Dead Weight: Prologue from developer Klukva Games and publisher Spaghetti Cat.

Look, if you clicked on this article because of the thumbnail, it’s fine. I’m not going to judge you, buddy. But if that’s how you get suckered into giving this one a go, then that’s fine with me, because it looks like a lot of fun. It’s a roguelike turn-based RPG with some gorgeous-looking pixel art work, and it’s currently sitting at an 83% “Positive” score on Steam.

Next up, we've got Skybound, a 3D puzzle platformer from developer Half Home Games and publisher DADIU.

This looks like some easy breezy fun, and the dialogue got a couple of chuckles out of me already. Plus, you use a big anchor as a grapple, and any game with hookshot mechanics is a 10/10 to me. Speaking of, it’s earned itself an impressive 94% “Positive” score on Steam, as of writing.

Thirdly, we've got Unbound, a 2D platformer from developer and publisher Primal Crowd, which sounds like it's a sequel to the previous entry in this list, but is in fact unrelated.

The cutscenes in the trailer may be slightly lacking in the quality department, but don't let that fool you. This one is a Celeste-style precision platformer with some cool mechanics that look pretty fun, like a jetpack! Also, it's rated "Positive" on Steam, with 86% of the reviews being favourable.

And finally, Operation: Outbreak is a 3D survival horror FPS from developer and publisher DREADMITH Games.

Not too much to say about this one, but weirdly, that’s kind of a positive. The zombie models and animations are pretty high quality, and the shooting mechanics look tight. Really reminds me of that WiiU game ZombiU, and I mean that in a complimentary way. 83% of the reviews on this one are positive, which explains how it's earned its "Very Positive" score on Steam.

And that’s your whole lot, for now.

Not a bad list, huh? It may be a late present, but you can’t say I didn’t get you anything for Christmas this year (even if I didn’t have to pay for any of the games on this list).
