Life comes at you fast sometimes – how else do you explain us not noticing that John Marston had two children?

Maybe we’re being a little too hard on ourselves; after all, there’s a lot to see and do in Red Dead Redemption.

We’ve seen terrifying things, things our eyes had managed to avoid during previous playthroughs.

There’s also been chilling NPC details that have stayed with us long after Arthur’s story has ended.

In short, we’ve been preoccupied with other matters, so it’s not totally our fault we didn’t know about John’s entire family.

Being an outlaw comes with a price in Red Dead Redemption 2

Considering how the narrative in the first game unfolds, it makes sense that we remember John’s son.

However, John also had a daughter.

Unfortunately, his little girl didn’t make it. As detailed in Red Dead Redemption, she died when she was a child, though why she passed away isn't clear.

To give you an idea of the daughter's timeline, here’s a little recap from a friendly Redditor.

“In RDR1, John's daughter was born either before or when he was still part of Dutch's gang [...] In RDR2 this got retconned and, in an Epilogue, - Part 2 scripted event it's implied that the daughter was born sometime between 1907-1911,” they explained.

If you cast your minds back to the epilogue ofd the sequel, “You can find Abigail crocheting at Beecher's Hope [...] John asks what she's making it for and she replies, ‘You'll see’.”

John's daughter's story was extremely short lived, and thus we didn’t care to get to know her because there was no one to really form a connection with.

Still, she existed, much to fans’ amazement.

Rockstar Games really packed in the lore with this franchise, even if sometimes all that packing doesn’t canonically make sense.

There you have it, John Marston had two children, and you didn’t realise it until now.
