Today's State of Play has been a mixed bag but the reveal of Until Dawn 2 was easily one of the event's highlights.
Fans suspected that an Until Dawn sequel might be on the way after the game's 2024 remake added a post credits scene showing Sam being awoken by a supernatural voice some years later.
Interestingly though, Sam is nowhere to be seen in Until Dawn 2's reveal trailer.
Supermassive Games has handed over development duties to Firesprite Entertainment, with Until Dawn 2 seemingly transitioning Until Dawn into an anthology series.

This new entry features a whole new cast of characters, for the most part, centring around a group of online ghost hunters who fake content for views.
When the group travels to a seemingly abandoned tropical island, they discover more than they bargained for, with Neil Newbon of Baldur's Gate 3 fame seeming featuring in a starring role alongside the younger leads.
I say the game features mainly new characters as Until Dawn's analyst, Dr Alan J. Hill, appeared to feature. This is set within Until Dawn's universe then so perhaps that Sam flashback wasn't meaningless after all.
Once again, players will have to make quick-fire decisions as they attempt to guide the game's characters through a perilous night to make it through, you guessed it, until dawn.
"Our cast this time is a crew of ghost hunters, the faces behind the wildly popular paranormal channel, Dead True.. Only, well… they’ve never actually seen anything supernatural," Firesprite teased on the PlayStation Blog.
"The scares they are known for are, let’s say, a little staged. But all that changes when for the very first time, they come face-to-face with real horrors and must start living up to their reputation to survive until dawn.
"Having just signed a deal with a big TV network, the crew gets shipped off to an abandoned tropical island for their first fully funded episode. At first, it’s all sun, sand, secrets… plus some very not-safe-for-the-workplace drama as their complicated relationships bubble to the surface.
"Of course, there’s more to this beautiful island than meets the eye. Beneath this blissful exterior, hide dreadful and heartbreaking secrets – centuries old and hungry for vengeance… and our crew have landed right in the middle of it.
"Chasing likes might have brought them here, but survival quickly becomes the only metric that counts. Will you help them escape to tell the world their story, or will they become just another haunted legend, claimed by the island?"
Some of the game's tricky decisions are already being teased: "Will you risk injury to save a cute baby boar from a gnarly bear trap? Keep a scandalous affair going, even if it could blow up the group? Push someone to their breaking point, all for the sake of content that your intimidating boss says you need to get?"
It's been teased that character relationships are far more important this time around compared to the original Until Dawn.
They won't simply change the dynamics between your core crew. How you make the characters interact can set off butterfly effects with devastating consequences, which sounds pretty similar to Supermassive's recent release Directive 8020.
Until Dawn 2 is confirmed to be launching in 2027 on PlayStation 5.
