PlayStation Plus Extra has just added a brand new Day 1 release, and it’s one worth checking out if you’re a subscriber.
One of the key benefits of subscribing to a service such as PlayStation Plus is you get access to hundreds of different free games, depending on the tier you’re subscribed to.
Some of these games can even be Day One titles, allowing you to play a brand new game upon its release without forking out a large amount of money to buy it.
The most recent example of this is Skate Story, which releases today on PlayStation Plus Extra as a Day One game.
Skate Story Is Not Your Dad's Skateboarding Game
In Skate Story, you play as a demon in the underworld who is tasked by The Devil to skate to the moon and swallow it, thereby earning your freedom.

“Ollie, kickflip, and grind your way through the ash and smoke of The Emptylands as you take on a seemingly impossible quest,” reads Skate Story’s description.

“Learn to master your weight and motion to conquer the weeping concrete. Savour the ritualistic beauty as you set your feet to pop a perfect kickflip.
“Skate fast to destroy vicious demons, help a forgetful frog, and save other tortured souls on your journey from fragile beginner to hardened skater. Push through hell and discover The Devil’s greatest weakness: humility, perseverance, and a disgustingly sweet backside tailslide.”
So, it’s not quite your average skateboarding game like skate. and Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater. Instead, it blends the genre with that of an action game for the weirdos like me who enjoy odd twists on familiar genres.
On PlayStation 5 specifically, Skate Story also has a unique feature where your DualSense controller light bar will change colour depending on the environment, a neat little addition to the game’s exploration.
Being a rather odd game, Skate Story is likely going to be this month’s hidden gem. And its appeal makes a bit more sense when you realise it’s being published by Devolver Digital.
The game has already won several awards, including the Chanel Next Prize and Tribeca Games Award in 2024, and is probably going to be a sleeper hit for players to check out over the holiday season.
Skate Story is out later today (8 December) on PlayStation Plus Extra (Premium users will also be able to grab it).
It’ll also be coming to Steam and Nintendo Switch 2.
