Survival horror fans, especially if you love Resident Evil and Silent Hill, will want to download this PlayStation freebie right now.

Don’t get me wrong, I love modern horror games, whether it’s new iterations of Capcom’s Resident Evil or the fantastic remake of Konami’s Silent Hill 2 of 2024 developed by Bloober Team.

Speaking of Bloober Team, stepping out of the shadow that is the Silent Hill 2 remake, recently, the talented Polish team released a brand new survival horror IP, Cronos: The New Dawn, and I couldn't recommend it enough.

In my review, I said, “Cronos: The New Dawn is no walk in the park, and it will not hold your hand, and that’s exactly how survival horror games should be,” adding, “It may go down as the best horror game this year.”

Perhaps one game that could rival Cronos: The New Dawn as the best survival horror game this year is the sequel to 2021’s Tormented Souls, developed by Dual Effect and Abstract Digital Works.

Tormented Souls is a throwback to the survival horror games of the late 90s and early 2000s. It has optional tank controls, challenging difficulty, puzzle solving, backtracking and plenty of nightmarish creatures.

If you’ve not played Tormented Souls yet, you should check it out, and with it taking 10 to 15 hours to finish, you’ve still got plenty of time to get ready for its upcoming sequel next month.

“Caroline Walker hopes for a normal life with her sister, Anna. Yet in the months that follow, Anna is haunted by visions of violence and death, compelling her to create disturbing drawings that rapidly manifest into horrifying reality,” reads the synopsis of Tormented Souls 2.

“Desperate to free her of this affliction, Caroline travels to the remote town of Villa Hess and a mysterious clinic nestled deep within the mountains of southern Chile. But behind the warm smiles of the facility’s serene staff lies a sickening truth, and the sisters soon find themselves at the centre of an entirely new nightmare.”

Tormented Souls 2 follows on directly from the events of its predecessor, but will no doubt bring improved gameplay, visuals, atmosphere and more. If you’re dying to get a sample of the sequel ahead of its launch, you’re in luck.

Available to download right now via the PlayStation Store is the free playable demo for Tormented Souls 2. What’s more, the demo is also available on PC and Xbox.

Tormented Souls 2 will be released on 23 October 2025, just in time for Halloween.
