Don't sleep on this PlayStation Plus 'masterpiece'

There are a lot of exclusives in the PlayStation line-up, many of which appear on PlayStation Plus. However, one of those games is often overlooked and has become a sleeper hit that some call a 'masterpiece'.

Returnal is a roguelike action-shooter that plays within a time-loop, watching the central character die over and over and over again, slowly making progress and puzzling out the core mystery.

Returnal is a brilliant example of the modern roguelike genre.

Returnal has a lot of fans it seems and many of them are in this Reddit thread created by someone who deems the game a "masterpiece". The original post from u/JimmySteve3556 breaks down how much they loved the game, despite being a "casual gamer". They expressed their love for the game, coming to it by chance after finishing Demon's Souls.

Their post caused an influx of players stepping forward to rave about how great the game is. "The visual and audio design, and the atmosphere it creates is exceptional," says one user, and they're not wrong. Returnal is a very atmospheric game and one that relies on gorgeous visuals and a banging soundtrack.

"Unbelievable game! The rush of dodging last minute and shooting back is amazing," says u/Ok_Captain7309, who hints at the difficulty of the game. It is known for being hard as nails and so many of the comments agree that the game is wonderful, but it also takes no prisoners. "The game was just too hard for me, gave it 30hrs and made no progress," said one user who believes the game to be harder than any Soulsborne titles. Another Redditor agreed stating, "I have not been able to get past the first boss."

Returnal might not be for everyone, but it deserves its flowers, especially as an exclusive that held up the PS5 for quite a while until more exclusives came along.
