PlayStation Plus is above to undergo an enormous change, one that could make the subscription service obsolete for millions of gamers.

As far as video game subscription services go PlayStation Plus is a solid, if not pricey, option depending on which tier takes your fancy.

PlayStation Plus Essential is the cheapest and this month it’s the best as instead of the usual three free games you’re actually getting five, depending on where you live.

The next tier up is PlayStation Plus Extra which is where most subscribers sit, with a rapidly changing game library and new additions every month.

PlayStation Plus Premium is an elite tier that you’ll only really benefit from if you’re a fan of retro classics or cloud-streaming.

There’s a big problem on the way for all forms of subscribers though.. Pretty soon PlayStation Plus will shift its focus towards those on PlayStation 5, leaving PlayStation 4 gamers behind.

PS4-
Sony

At the start of this year PlayStation announced in one of its blog posts that as of January 2026 PlayStation Plus “will focus on offering PS5 titles through the Monthly Games and Game Catalog benefit.”

The post went on to say “PS4 games will no longer be a key benefit and will only be occasionally offered for PlayStation Plus Monthly Games and Game Catalog starting January 2026. We may still provide titles that can be playable on both PS4 and PS5 consoles after this date.”

It was noted that this won’t affect any of your existing titles.

So if you redeemed a PS4 game through PlayStation Plus Essential it won’t magically become unplayable after January, that’d just be ridiculous.

What it will affect though is the selection on PlayStation Plus Extra.

If a PS4 game is removed it likely won’t be replaced if there’s a PS5 version available, so for those who still play on a PlayStation 4 your Extra game library might take a hefty blow.

This will be devastating news to plenty of gamers out there, and if you want to get ahead of the change I’d recommend scanning for any outstanding Black Friday deals or keeping an eye out over the festive season for a PlayStation 5. That’s if you want to keep getting the most out of PlayStation Plus, otherwise cancelling your membership might be the best bet.

The countdown is coming to a close, but for now enjoy the latest and upcoming additions to PlayStation Plus for December, some of them are bangers.
