Sony’s PlayStation brand is one of the most powerful in the console market but it could have had a different future at least in terms of what the brand could have been named.

The original PlayStation was released in 1994 and blessed us with some absolute bangers from Final Fantasy VII, Silent Hill, Resident Evil 2, Metal Gear Solid and much more. Without a doubt, Sony PlayStation is one of the most recognisable brands in the video game industry alongside the likes of Xbox and Nintendo.

For decades, Sony’s blue brand has continued to evolve with the announcement of the highly anticipated PlayStation 5 Pro expected to be made later today. However, what if we told you that the PS5 Pro could have been called Power Station 5 Pro?

Yep, that’s right, the PlayStation name could have been something that resembled a tower extension lead or a cheap knockoff console from Wish. Well, as reported by Push Square, that reality was closer than we may have thought.

When speaking to Simon Parkin on the My Perfect Console podcast, former Sony Computer Entertainment president, Chris Deering said that the original name proposed for PlayStation was the aforementioned “Power Station”.

Thankfully, however, due to trademark issues in “some parts of the world”, it meant that the name Power Station could not have been used which is why Sony eventually opted to use PlayStation. I think it’s fair to say that those trademark issues were a blessing in disguise.

Unsurprisingly, Deering also revealed that there was some pushback from some people in Sony marketing over the Power Station, a name that the former president liked.

As for the PlayStation 5 Pro, we’ll keep you updated once that expected information drops later today in a technical presentation by Mark Cerny.
