PlayStation just brutally killed off one of its most beloved series

Could there be a reason for this?

PlayStation gamers are saddened following news that a beloved series is being unceremoniously removed from the PS Store and the PS Plus library.

Since the original PlayStation console graced us with its presence in 1994, we’ve been treated to a plethora of first-party franchises such as God of War, The Last of Us and much more.

We’ve also had our fair share of surprise hits, games that we never expected much from but made us fall for a franchise from the get-go.

Check out the Resistance 3 trailer below!

One of those franchises is Resistance from Insomniac Games, the same studio that brought us the likes of Marvel’s Spider-Man, Spyro the Dragon, as well as Ratchet & Clank, to name a few.

Fans have longed for the return of Resistance, with its last mainline entry in the series being Resistance 3 in 2011 on the PlayStation 3.

Yet, in November 2024, to the delight of fans, Resistance and Resistance 2 arrived on PlayStation Plus Premium, joining Resistance 3 and Resistance: Retribution already on the service.

Sadly, as reported by Push Square, after just six months of arriving on PlayStation Plus, Resistance and Resistance 2 will be leaving the service on 20 May 2025.

From what I understand at the time of writing, Resistance 3 and Resistance: Retribution will remain on PlayStation Plus Premium, for now.

Both Insomniac Games titles are a batch of 22 games leaving PS Plus next month. However, unlike many games in that list, Resistance and Resistance 2 will be unplayable on modern consoles.

Unlike InFAMOUS: Second Son, which is a native PlayStation 4 game, both Resistance titles are PlayStation 3. This means that both cannot be downloaded to a modern console and can only be streamed.

The only way to play Resistance and Resistance 2 after 20 May is with a PlayStation 3 console. But could there be positive news on the horizon? This is mere speculation on my part, but is Sony removing the native PS3 Resistance games because official remasters are in the works? The optimist in me hopes so.

It feels strange that Sony would remove both games completely from PlayStation Plus after just six months, unless there are alternative plans in motion behind the scenes.

I guess we’ll find out either way in the coming months. In the meantime, if you want to play Resistance and Resistance 2 before 20 May, you might want to do that sooner rather than later.
