PlayStation gamers furiously boycotting over controversial update

That's a lot of angry fans

Some PlayStation users are cancelling their subscriptions to PlayStation Plus or boycotting the service in other ways since the change came to reduce the amount of store credit available from PlayStation Stars.

In the past, PlayStation Stars was a handy way to earn some extra cash to spend on PSN by buying digital games and DLC.

One of this month's free games on PlayStation Plus is the excellent Ghostwire: Tokyo.

With the drastic reduction in the amounts you can claim as rewards, many users see the service as pointless.

One could argue that PlayStation Stars is simply a cherry on the cake. After all, if you’re buying the games anyway, it’s a bonus treat that in the future you’ll have accumulated enough points to get a cheap or free game.

Some users saw the service as a way to game the system and get to that free cash faster, which is a legitimate way to use it, but that’s not its purpose.

There are countless Reddit posts saying things like, “PS Stars without PS store credit is a dead service,” or this: “Whoever thought removing/limiting the options to get wallet fund needs to be f**king fired.”

The Stars system was seen by many as an incentive to buy digitally, sacrificing the feeling of having a product on the shelf by opting for ways to save money.

Of course, as time passes and more companies come out and tell players they don’t own their digital games, merely licenses, it’s no surprise that they’ve decided to boycott.

Add to this that some users have been saving up points that are now invalid, the anger is understandable.

One Redditor calls Sony’s decision “seriously messed up," adding that, "they could’ve at least given a warning”.

Another says, “I had been purchasing a lot more from digital store in last year and since the program started, but now that the value for loyalty is gone, it’s stopping.”

It’s a feature unlikely to see change on Sony’s part, so now many gamers are so furious they’ll simply stop buying digitally or cancel their PlayStation Plus subscriptions.
