PlayStation has dropped a charming freebie that you can download and play right now, even without a PS Plus subscription.

As much value as PlayStation Plus can offer, regardless of the tier, sometimes it’s nice to check out a game that won't cost us a single penny.

Massive free-to-play games such as Fortnite and Call of Duty: Warzone can arguably offer more value than a fully priced AAA release, that’s as long as you don't overindulge in microtransactions. Otherwise, you can foot quite the bill over time.

However, free playable demos can also offer great value in their own right. Sure, playable demos only offer a snippet of a full game, but more so than trailers, they can give us the best indication as to whether a game is worth coughing up the cash.

One such demo is for Yooka-Replaylee, a reimaging of the 3D platformer from Playtonic Games, Yooka-Laylee, that was originally released in 2017.

Yooka-Laylee was considered to be a spiritual successor to Rare’s Banjo-Kazooie from the Nintendo 64. Playtonic Games even has some old-school Rare developers on the team.

“Two unlikely treasure hunters retell the story of their greatest adventure; how they crashed their ship, discovered perhaps the most valuable book in the universe, only for its Pagies to be stolen by a greedy capitalist, Capital B,” reads the synopsis of the game.

“Step into a wacky adventure across many fantastical and imaginative worlds, full of colourful characters and vault-loads of shiny collectables, and save the world!”

Yooka-Replaylee may not be out until next month, but you can get a sample of the game now, courtesy of its aforementioned demo via the PlayStation Store.

You may also be pleased to know that the demo is also available on Xbox. It was initially available on Steam, but at the time of writing, it appears to have been removed.

“This demo is a dream come true. I’ve been waiting since the announcement. It's like playing a Rare title again after so long. The demo was incredibly fun. Keep at it!” said Funnygamer22 in the comments section on YouTube.

“I just played the demo! I love the new content you added to the intro! It adds some interesting new ideas and details to the story,” explained xylopiano3.

“Awesome! I'm excited to play the demo!” declared swordheartstudios.

Yooka-Replaylee will be released on 9 October 2025 on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S and Nintendo Switch 2.
