While we wait for the arrival of the PlayStation 6 (which is hopefully two or three years away), many fans will be excited that a new graphics update could be on the way for current-gen consoles.
When the PlayStation 5 Pro was released on 7 November 2024, it provided a massive leap in visuals and performance over the standard PS5 console. With that, also came the hefty price tag of £699.99, double the launch price of the PS4 Pro at £349.99.

One of the defining features of the PlayStation 5 Pro is software called PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution), which vastly improves resolution scaling using AI.

Now, as reported by TechRadar, rumours are making the rounds that Sony is going to release a free firmware update for the PlayStation 5 Pro with PSSR 2 that will not only support lower resolutions but also 4K at 120 frames per second and 8K at 60fps.
However, this all sounds great, but the sceptic in me instantly thinks this will be used as a convenient excuse for Sony to increase the price of the PlayStation 5 consoles again, following the lead of Nintendo and Microsoft.
At this point, I’m dreading the prices of next-gen consoles.
“Native 4K/60fps is really all you need,” said Redditor demonoddy with Boulderdrip joking in response, “It’s 2007: 'HD 1080p/30fps is all you really need.’”

“Let me pull an 8K TV out of my backside real quick,” exclaimed PastaVeggies.
“PSSR2 is hopefully available before GTA VI drops. But I'm not expecting miracles,” said 1440pSupportPS5.
“I'm just happy Sony is trying to do something with resolution scaling. Whether people like it or not, native is going more out the window, and this type of technology is only going to continue to increase its usage in games,” explained ILoveTheAtomicBomb.
We’ll update you if Sony drops information on the rumoured PSSR2.
