Finally, after months of rumours, the PlayStation 5 is officially getting one of the most important Xbox games ever.

The most important series on the Xbox brand is arguably Halo. However, not too far behind the legendary adventures of John-117, aka the Master Chief, is the Gears of War series.

Released on the Xbox 360 in 2006, Gears of War first introduced us to Marcus Fenix as he was broken out of cell block-38 at the Jacinto Maximum Security Prison by his brother-in-arms, Dominic Santiago, to save their home planet of Sera from a Locust (no, not the insects) invasion.

Fair to say, fans were instantly won over.

We’ve since seen Gears of War sequels, a prequel, spin-offs, and a remaster, plus we’re also getting the upcoming prequel Gears of War: E-Day for PC and Xbox Series X/S. But, before then, we’re being treated to Gears of War: Reloaded later this year.

Announced on the official Gears of War social media channels, Gears of War: Reloaded is a remaster of the original 2006 game. This is not the first time this Xbox classic has been remastered, with its first enhanced re-release arriving in 2015 on PC and Xbox One with Gears of War: Ultimate Edition, but it is the first time it's landing on PlayStation.

This new remaster will not only feature a 4K resolution with HDR support and 60 frames per second in the story campaign, but can also perform at 120fps in its cross-play multiplayer. Yes, Gears of War: Reloaded will have cross-play.

Moreover, the assets and textures have been remastered in 4K, it has improved shadows and reflections, improved anti-aliasing and audio, and no loading screens in the story campaign. It also includes all previously released DLC.

Moreover, for those who already own 2015’s Gears of War: Ultimate Edition, they will receive the 2025 upgrade for free with a digital code messaged to eligible Xbox accounts. You must also have purchased Gears of War: Ultimate Edition before 5 May 2025 to receive the free upgrade.

It must also be said that while you won't need a Microsoft account to play Gears of War: Reloaded on PlayStation 5, you will need a Microsoft account to take advantage of cross-play for the story campaign and multiplayer.

Gears of War: Reloaded will be released on 26 August 2025 on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. It will also launch day one on PC Game Pass and Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, then for the standard Xbox Game Pass at a later date.
